New Co-Editors-in-Chief for BMJ Quality & Safety journal

Rev’d Professor Bryony Dean Franklin and Professor Eric Thomas take up their posts this month

Rev’d Professor Bryony Dean Franklin and Professor Eric Thomas have been appointed as the new Co-Editors-in-Chief of BMJ Quality & Safety, one of more than 70 specialist journals published by BMJ and the top-ranked title in its field.

Professors Franklin and Thomas succeed Dr Kaveh Shojania and Professor Mary Dixon-Woods, who have been joint Editors-in-Chief since 2011.

Professor Franklin is currently Director of the Centre for Medication Safety and Service Quality (CMSSQ), a joint research unit between Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, where she is also Executive Lead Pharmacist for Research, and UCL School of Pharmacy, where she is Professor of Medication Safety.

Professor Franklin has been a Senior Editor of BMJ Quality & Safety since 2018.

Eric Thomas is Professor of Medicine at McGovern Medical School at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth), and Director of the UTHealth-Memorial Hermann Center for Healthcare Quality and Safety. He is also Associate Dean for Healthcare Quality in the Department of Internal Medicine at McGovern Medical School.

Professor Thomas has been on the Editorial Advisory Board of BMJ Quality & Safety since 2019.

Professor Franklin said: “I am very excited to be moving into this role and grateful to Kaveh and Mary for their leadership over the last 10 years. I look forward to continuing to work with the excellent team of senior and associate editors at the journal, as well as with Eric.  My vision is that we continue to support publication of high quality, internationally relevant content with clear relevance for clinical practice, as well as further growing our online and social media presence."

Professor Thomas said: “For 25 years I have dedicated my professional career to studying and improving healthcare quality and safety, and during this time have been an avid reader of, and reviewer for, BMJ Quality & Safety.  I look forward to the responsibility and opportunity to join the existing team of editors and to help ensure that the journal continues to publish high quality work, that we increase readership, and through those efforts contribute to improvements in healthcare quality and safety throughout the world."

Commenting on the appointments, Dr Jennifer Dixon, Chief Executive of independent charity, The Health Foundation, which  co-owns the journal with BMJ,  said: “BMJ Quality & Safety has been built up into a leading journal in the field of healthcare improvement. We are absolutely delighted to have secured such highly experienced academic editors, with very distinguished service to both the journal and the wider academic community.”
